On Monday, May 2nd from 6pm-9pm, Katherine Paxton will lead an SFRS workshop to educate Home Share Providers on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at Church of the Advent, 510 Mount View Avenue.

Katherine Paxton is a local Counsellor with over 25 years of experience supporting individuals with ASD and developmental disabilities. Katherine’s current specialty is supporting people with ASD, and their families and support networks. Katherine is kindly sharing her expertise on May 2nd by providing a workshop tailored to many of the reoccurring questions and concerns I have heard from SFRS Home Share Providers. Some of the topics Katherine will address include:

1). How individuals with ASD process information,

2). How individuals with ASD identify and express emotions,

3). What stimuli are sensitive to individuals with ASD and how this affects them, and

4). How individuals with ASD calm themselves, for example by using repetitive behaviors.

Katherine will set aside time for a Q&A period at the end of the workshop.

I’d like to extend an invitation to Home Share Providers from other agencies, since I suspect other providers have similar questions and concerns around caring for individuals with ASD. To register, please contact me (Sarah) at [email protected] by April 25th. Admission is $25 and can be paid by cheque to “Sooke Family Resource Society” by mail or in person to our Sooke or Langford offices, or over the phone by calling our Sooke Office at 250-642-5152.
